RASHAD EVANS KNOCKS OUT CHUCK LIDDELL GIVING HIM A DOSE OF HIS OWN MEDICINE

Rashad destroys Liddell just look at the damage! Enjoy the video while it last.

Chuck Liddell, known for his one-punch knock out power was on the other end of the stick, as rising MMA star Rashad Evans gave him a cracking overhand right to send the UFC superstar to dream world in Round Two of the Ultimate Fighting Championship 88 Breakthrough main event in Philips Arena, Atlanta on Sunday. It was the case of the quick and the dead as both fighters simultaneously released their punches with Evans' right landed first on Liddell's jaw negating the latter's uppercut.

The fighters started cautiously and as Round One progressed, Evans' punches were connecting and Liddell's bloodied face was the proof. Both warriors were contented with the stand up game and continued to exchange blows in the second round until the massive right caught Liddell. Liddell was out cold and Evans came rushing for some follow-up shots thankfully referee Herb Dean was quick restrain the winner.

Congratulations Rashad Evans! It is an unexpected sweet victory for him (for most fans anyway including me luckily I didn't discount him). The prospect of Evans facing defending UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin is making me excited already.

UFC 88 BREAKTHROUGH OR KATSIDIS-DIAZ?

This Sunday, I still can't make up my mind on what sporting event to watch. Will it be UFC 88 Breakthrough featuring Piccolo, I mean, Chuck Liddell versus Rashad Evans in the main event, or the mouthwatering match between two ring warriors Michael Katsidis and Juan Diaz? The problem with the UFC event is - it might turn into another overwhelming victory by Liddell unlike the Michael Katsidis (Australia) versus Juan Diaz fight (no disrespect meant to Rashad Evans. I know Mixed Martial Arts is unpredictable anything can happen).Though, the only thing I'm sure about the boxing match tomorrow is - it is going to be explosive. Both Katsidis and Diaz (United States) never back down, they are always aggressive. They seek to knock somebody out and would always press for action - that's the reason I said it is going to be a mouthwatering fight. Nowadays, it is rare for two gung-ho warriors to meet each other. But I must admit most boxers today are boring though some are technically sound in the game of sweet science. No matter what happens -I'll keep you my dear readers updated.

I see Katsidis getting cut again. He bleeds easily - sometimes his aggressive style backfires on him (see Katsidis vs Casamayor match - Katsidis was leading in the match but got cocky in the later rounds and was knocked out). Not to mention, his big mouth stirs hostility against him.

On the other hand, Juan Diaz was outsmarted by Nate Campbell in their last match. Campbell used all the tricks he had and came away with a victory.

Due to these losses, both of them were eliminated in the fictional race among lightweights to face Manny Pacquiao. Still in the running are Nate Campbell and Joel Casamayor - their technical style don't attract a huge following that's why these two won't meet anytime soon. Juan Manuel Marquez, who haughtily declared he beat Manny twice last week and Joan Guzman (aka Guzrun to disgruntled fans) are also candidates to date, I mean fight Manny. By the way, the four of them will meet each other next week: Guzman vs Campbell and Marquez vs Casamayor. Hard for some people to swallow reality, but these boxers are after MONEY Pacquiao - it is an undeniable fact in the lightweights.

Amir Khan put himself in the race but backed out after seeing Pacquiao vs Diaz fight months ago. He was scared or humbled, whichever you prefer by that HARROWING experience.

Because of its relevance, I think I will prioritize the boxing match first.

ANDERSON SILVA KOS OPPONENT IN SPECTACULAR FASHION - AGAIN

Meet the Spider

11:43 am MST - Anderson Silva easily destroys James Irvin in 1:01 of the first round in UFC Fight Night 14 at The Pearl, Las Vegas. He knocked his opponent out faster than I could produce this piece - SPECTACULAR!

R1: Silva comes out and lands a short right cross. He catches Irvins kick attempt and knocks him down with a huge punch. Silva follows it up with a barrage of punches and the ref jumps in and stops the fight. Irvin is out.

ILL WILL

Originally written May 26, 2008

Yesterday (May 25 –author) reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder B.J. Penn won via KO over Sean Sherk in Las Vegas, USA (UFC 84). It was an epic fight among the two warriors but in the first round the match started slow and turned into a boxing match with two fighters calculating each other’s moves and were content with exchanging blows. The match eventually picked up and in the last round BJ Penn caught Sherk with a combo forcing the latter to back down and bounced off the octagon. Then Penn delivered a cracking knee to Sherk knocking the latter down. The Hawaiian unleashed a flurry of punches to the defenseless Sherk. BJ Penn won via TKO as Sherk was unable to continue by end of Round 3.

Other Notable Bouts

Silva vs. Jardine

Wanderlei Silva’s fast hands were too much for Matt Jardine as the Brazilian turned the American into a punching bag. Silva won via KO (through punches) 0:36 which mean 36 seconds after the match started the Axe Murderer destroyed Jardine! It deservedly won as the Fight of the Night.

Machida vs Ortiz

Lyoto Machida put up a smart fight against UFC legend Tito Ortiz defeating the latter via unanimous decision. It was just right I guess. Losers who fought Ortiz without thinking usually gets kayoed out of their senses – what’s wrong with sticking to game plan? Unfortunately, due to differences with Dana White, UFC President, Ortiz won’t be returning to the UFC.

Ong Bak

Ong Bak is a Thai film about a man Boonting (Tony Jaa) who went to the city to recover a stolen head of Buddha (Buddha statuette is called by the villagers as Ong Bak). To the poor villagers, Ong Bak is their god and losing it is a disaster for them. Boonting uses his Muay Thai skills against enemies who want to stop him from his quest. I don't want to use give any more details or I'll spoil the movie for you.
I've heard of this movie through word-of-mouth with people telling me about the "spectacular fight scenes". I've seen Muay Thai before and I believe in its effectiveness. Muay Thai moves are regularly employed in MMA fights. When I saw the movie, my admiration for Thai boxing increased even more. I saw moves I've never seen before. In fact, the movie is refreshing as it’s not overloaded with special effects (sfx only makes a martial art move look unnatural in a movie) which have become a staple in film making nowadays. All outrageous Muay Thai moves and stunts were done naturally or so the producer said (Tony Jaa can perform these moves and stunts live backing the claim up successfully).
I'm familiar with Kung Fu movies so when I expect a kick, Tony knees his opponents. He also displayed his mastery of other martial arts like Wushu (when he used those long sticks reminiscent of Jet Li in Hero), and Arnis (when he used two sticks to beat up another adversary) in the movie.
If there's any showcase piece for Muay Thai, Ong Bak can claim it. The film lived up and exceeded my expectations.
